Chapters 25-29

In the middle of the night, Hayley woke up and heard Nick moaning. She heard him talking in his sleep. She heard her name and looked at him and saw him smiling and sleeping. She realized that he was dreaming about her and laid there in shock. She went back to sleep. The next morning, Hayley woke up and got up and got dressed and saw Nick still sleeping. She went downstairs and heard the doorbell ring. She opened the door and saw Brian standing there.

        “Hi Hayley,” Brian said.

“Brian, just the person I wanted to talk to,” Hayley said. Brian came in and they went out back and sat by the pool.

“What’s up, everything going okay?” Brian asked.

“Everything is fine so far, except that, well, in the middle of the night, I woke up and heard Nick moaning, and he was talking in his sleep and he said my name and I looked at him and he was sleeping and smiling, is there something I don’t know about or a reason he is dreaming about me,” Hayley said.

“Hayley, you are his dream girl, he’s been dreaming of you for awhile now but he never saw you before, when he was sober, he began dreaming about you, although he didn’t know it was you, but he described you perfectly,” Brian said.

        “Wow,” Hayley said.

“I guess he was dreaming about you by remembering you from when he was drunk, that’s what I think of it, because it seems that the dream happened after that night,” Brian said.

“The night we got drunk and got married,” Hayley said.

        “Yeah,” Brian said.

“What should I do?” Hayley asked.

“Talk to him about it,” Brian said. Hayley nodded.

        “Okay,” Hayley said.

That afternoon, Nick was sitting out by the pool. Hayley came out in her bathing suit and sat down in the chair beside him.

“Can we talk about something?” Hayley asked.

        “Sure,” Nick said.

“I woke up in the middle of the night and heard you moaning and talking, I heard you say my name and you were smiling while you were sleeping, are you dreaming about me?” Hayley asked.

“Yeah, it’s been happening for awhile,” Nick said.

“Do you have feelings for me?” Hayley asked.

        “Yeah, I do,” Nick said.

“I have feelings for you, too,” Hayley said. They continued talking.

Six months went by. Hayley was eight months pregnant and headed for a checkup when a car slammed into her car. Hayley sat there stunned. She got out. The other driver came up to her.

“Oh my god, I am so sorry, are you okay, are you hurt?” the woman asked.

“I’m fine, I think,” Hayley said.

“Are you pregnant?” the woman asked.

“Yeah, eight months along,” Hayley said.

“Oh my gosh, you’re bleeding!” the woman said. Hayley looked down and saw her pants soaked with blood. She sat down as the woman called 911. Hayley held her stomach as pains started.

“Oh god, I will never forgive myself if I hurt your baby!” the woman said coming over to her. The police arrived. An officer came over to Hayley and saw blood.

“Ma’am, are you hurt?” the officer said.

“No, but I think something is wrong with my baby,” Hayley said.

“How far along are you, ma’am?” the officer said.

“Eight months, I was on my way to a checkup,” Hayley said.

“Where is your husband?” the officer asked.

“He was at a meeting, he was going to meet me there,” Hayley said.

“Have you called him?” the officer said.

“No,” Hayley said. She gave him the number and the officer called Nick. She held her stomach as pains started again.

“Your husband will meet us at the hospital, I’m taking you there myself,” the officer said. He led Hayley to his squad car and drove her to the hospital. She prayed that she didn’t lose the baby.

Chapter 26

Nick was talking with Brian and Kevin as they walked out of the meeting when Nick's phone rang. Nick pulled it out and answered it.

"Hello, yes, what, oh my god, yeah, I'll be right there," Nick said. He hung up and looked at Brian and Kevin.

"Nick, what is it, is it Hayley?" Brian asked.

"She was in a car accident, she's in the hospital," Nick said. He ran to his car and got in and went to the hospital with Kevin and Brian following in their cars. Nick parked at the hospital and ran in and went to the front desk.

"Hi, I'm looking for my wife, she was brought in after a car accident by a cop, she's eight months pregnant," Nick said.

"Name?" the woman asked.

"Her name is Hayley Carter," Nick said.

"She's in maternity, 3rd floor," the woman said looking at her computer. Nick, Brian and Kevin went up to the 3rd floor. Nick went to the nurse's station.

"Can I help you, sir?" the nurse asked.

"I'm looking for my wife, Hayley Carter, I got a call that she was brought in, she's eight months pregnant," Nick said.

"She's in Room 311," the nurse said. Nick went down to the room and went in and saw Hayley lying in bed looking out the window.

"Hayley," Nick said coming over to the bed.

"Nick," Hayley said as he hugged her. He sat down and saw her stomach.

"Hayley, the baby?" Nick asked.

"I don't know what happened, I passed out on the way into the hospital and I just woke up," Hayley said. Nick took her hand.

"Mr. and Mrs. Carter?" a doctor asked coming in.

"Yes," Nick said.

"I'm Dr. Green," he said.

"What happened to my baby?" Hayley asked.

"We had to perform a C-section to get the baby out," Dr. Green said.

"Where is my baby," Hayley said. Nick held her hand as they looked at the doctor.

"Where is our baby, Dr. Green," Nick said.

"I'm sorry to say this but the baby was stillborn, I'm sorry," Dr. Green said.

"There has to be a mistake, my baby can't be dead!" Hayley said. Nick got up and sat beside her on the bed and wrapped his arms around her.

"I'm sorry, there was nothing we could do," Dr. Green said.

"Oh god no!" Hayley cried as Nick held her close. She cried as he held her close.

"I am very sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Carter," Dr. Green said.

"Was it a boy or a girl?" Nick asked softly.

"It was a girl, Mr. Carter," Dr. Green said. Hayley sobbed harder. Nick held her close and rested his head on top of her head. Dr. Green left the room. Brian and Kevin came in and saw them crying. Nick silently told them what happened. Brian and Kevin left to call Howie and AJ. Hayley fell asleep crying.

Chapter 27

Nick sat in his house staring at the window. Hayley was in bed where she has been since Nick brought her home from the hospital three months ago. No matter how many times Nick told her, she still thinks it was her fault for the baby being stillborn. The front door opened and Brian and Leighanne came in with Dr. Green.

"Nick, hi," Dr. Green said sitting down beside him.

"Hi, Dr. Green, thanks for coming," Nick said.

"Where is Hayley?" Dr. Green asked.

"Upstairs in bed," Nick said getting up. They went upstairs and went into the bedroom and saw Hayley laying in bed staring out the window. Dr. Green went over to the bed and sat down.

"Hi Hayley," Dr. Green said. Hayley turned and looked at her.

"Hi, Dr. Green, what brings you by?" Hayley asked.

"You keep missing your checkups, I asked Nick why he didn't bring you, he said he told you but you didn't want to go," Dr. Green said.

"I didn't see the point, I mean, I'm not pregnant anymore, my baby is dead, so why bother coming for checkups," Hayley said.

"Hayley, it's important that I check and see the progress of you healing up, we had to do a C-section which meant that you had to be closed up and I needed to see if you were healing right," Dr. Green said.

"I don't care, my life is over now, I have nothing to live for," Hayley said. She looked back out the window and didn't see the look on Nick's face. He walked out of the room and went downstairs and out the backdoor and went out on the beach and sat down and stared out in the ocean. Brian came out and sat beside him.

"She has nothing to live for, she doesn't seem to care that I lost something too," Nick said. Brian looked at him.

"Maybe you two need to talk," Brian said.

"She won't listen," Nick said.

Back at the house......

"Hayley, you can have more children, it isn't the end of the world here, stuff like this happens, there are alot of parents who have been where you are now and they never let anything stop them from having children, a couple lost a child yesterday like you did and they said to me that they are not going to let anything stop them from having another child," Dr. Green said.

"Nick and I are not in love, we got drunk, got married, had sex, I got pregnant, there was no love there, there still isn't, even though I have fallen for him big time, he don't feel the same about me," Hayley said.

"Maybe you two need to talk, you don't know how he feels," Dr. Green said.

"Hayley, you and Nick need to talk about all this, he lost a part of him, too," Leighanne said. Hayley looked at Leighanne and sat up.

"It is my fault that my baby is dead, I was driving, I should have waited for Nick to come and get me but I had to go ahead and go because I thought I could drive myself," Hayley said.

"Hayley, it was an accident, sometimes stuff happens that you don't want it to," Leighanne said.

"I can't get past it, it hurts too much," Hayley said. Nick came in with Brian.

"Can I talk to my wife alone, please," Nick said. Dr. Green, Brian, and Leighanne left the room. Nick sat down on the bed.

"What is it," Hayley said.

"We have to talk about us, Hayley," Nick said.

"When do you want me out?" Hayley asked.

"What, what makes you think I want you gone," Nick said.

"I lost our baby, Nick, I thought there was nothing keeping us together," Hayley said.

"Hayley, we are married, that is keeping us together, I don't want you to go, ever," Nick said. Hayley looked at him.

"What," Hayley said. He pulled her up and into his arms.

"I want you here forever, I have fallen for you and I want us to have a real marriage," Nick said. Hayley looked up at him.

"I feel the same way," Hayley said. He kissed her deeply. She wrapped her arms around him and he pulled her closer without hurting her.

Three weeks later, Hayley and Nick were in Dr. Green's office. They held hands and Dr. Green examined her.

"You are completely healed up and are able to get pregnant again," Dr. Green said. Hayley smiled and looked at Nick. He was gazing at her.

"Thanks, Dr. Green," Hayley said as Nick helped her up. They went home and the moment the door closed, Nick had her in his arms and he carried her up the stairs to the bedroom. He laid her on the bed and laid on top of her and they began kissing.

"So, do you want to get started on a family?" Nick asked. Hayley looked up at him and smiled.

"Yes, I do, as soon as possible," Hayley said. They removed each other's clothes and they made love. He laid on top of her and buried his face in her neck. They laid there holding each other.

Chapter 28

Three months later, Hayley was pregnant and happy. Nick was happy at the thought of being a father. Nick went to his dad’s house to tell him the news and then was going to his mother’s to tell her the news.  But she was concerned because in order to tell his dad and mom the news about them becoming grandparents, that means telling them about the marriage and everything. The doorbell rang. She got up and opened the door and saw Kristin standing there crying.

        “Kristin, what’s wrong,” Hayley said.

“We were suppose to be friends, Hayley, but somehow you made my husband fall in love with you, you stole him from me, I don’t know how you did it, remain happy with Nick and manage to ruin my marriage, I hope you are happy now, I will make sure Nick knows about this, we are no longer friends,” Kristin said. She walked off.

“Kristin, wait, I know nothing about all this!” Hayley called after her. Hayley closed the door and ran to the phone and called Nick.

        “Hello,” Nick said.

“Nick, I need you home now and if Kristin comes to you, don’t talk to her, don’t even listen to her, I will explain when you get here, just hurry, baby, please,” Hayley said.

“I’ll be right there, baby, I love you,” Nick said.

“I love you, too, so much, more than you know,” Hayley said. She hung up and sat down and prayed that he got home before Kristin got to him. She laid on the couch and watched TV.

Nick walked out of his mother’s house and saw Kristin by his car. He went to his car.

“Nick, we have to talk,” Kristin said.

“Hayley needs me, Kristin, I got to go,” Nick said.

“Your wife stole my husband away from me,” Kristin said. Nick looked at her.

“That is impossible because Hayley and I haven’t been apart since she lost the baby,” Nick said.

“Somehow she made Kevin fall in love with her,” Kristin said.

“Hayley loves only me, okay, Kevin must have done it on his own but she would never do anything to hurt me, she is pregnant with my child, Kristin, and don’t even claim it’s Kevin’s because I know it’s not, Dr. Green told us when Hayley conceived and it was the first night she and I made love after Dr. Green told us we could try for another baby, just leave us alone, alright, and tell Kevin the same, nothing is going to break me and Hayley up, nothing!” Nick said. He got into his car and drove off and went home. He walked into the house and saw Hayley lying on the couch, watching TV.

“Kristin was waiting for me when I came out of my mom’s house,” Nick said.

“So she told you,” Hayley said sitting up.

“Yeah, she did, but I know you didn’t do anything to break up their marriage, I know you wouldn’t do anything to hurt me,” Nick said.

“I didn’t know what was going on when she came to the door, she made it sound like I did it to hurt her, she said that she and I are no longer friends,” Hayley said. The doorbell rang. Nick opened the door and saw Kristin standing there. She came in and went over to Hayley.

“Did you tell him the truth!” Kristin said.

“Kristin, there is nothing to tell, I never did anything with Kevin and I am completely in love with Nick,” Hayley said.

“That baby you are carrying is Kevin’s!” Kristin said.

“Excuse me and when did I sleep with YOUR husband?” Hayley asked crossing her arms.

“Yeah, Kristin, when did she?” Nick asked.

“The same night you two slept together, she snuck out of here and went down to the beach and met Kevin and they slept together, she is lying to you, Nick,” Kristin said.

“Why are you doing this, Kristin, why tell these lies, I have no reason whatsoever to cheat on my husband, unless you are cheating on Kevin and is trying to wreck everyone’s marriage so you won’t be alone,” Hayley said. Kristin looked at her. Leighanne came in with Brian and Kevin behind her.

“She tried wrecking my marriage to Brian, it didn’t work so she is working on you and Nick’s marriage,” Leighanne said.

“Kristin, what the heck is wrong with you,” Kevin said. Everyone looked at Kristin.

Chapter 29

Kristin looked at everyone and sat down. She looks at Kevin and buries her face in her hands.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I haven’t cheated and I know Leighanne and Hayley never cheated, I am so sorry, I don’t know why I was doing it,” Kristin said. Kevin sat down beside her. Hayley went out back and sat down. Nick came out.

        “Baby, what’s wrong,” Nick said.

“Nick, I would never do anything to hurt you,” Hayley said.

“I know that, baby,” Nick said.

“How did your parents take the news?” Hayley asked.

“They were shocked and mad that I didn’t tell them about the marriage sooner but they want to meet you so they are coming over tomorrow for lunch,” Nick said.

“What about the news about them becoming grandparents?” Hayley asked.

“They were happy and upset because I didn’t tell them about the marriage,” Nick said.

“I’m scared, what if they don’t like me, or think I trapped you,” Hayley said.

“I know you didn’t, baby,” Nick said sitting beside her and holding her close. They heard commotion inside and went in and Hayley saw someone she never wanted to see again.

“Hi honey,” Matt said coming over to her. Hayley froze.

        “Who are you?” Nick asked.

“I’m Matt, her husband,” Matt said. Nick looked at Hayley.

        “Her husband?” Nick asked.

“Yeah, we were married in Missouri, until she left for a trip and never returned, her mother was kind enough to tell me where she was,” Matt said.

“You are married to this guy?” Nick asked looking at Hayley. She looked at him and opened her mouth to say something.

“Yeah, she is married to me,” Matt said.

“I want her to tell me,” Nick said.

        “Hayley,” Brian said.

“I was married to him, I thought it was annulled,” Hayley said.

“It wasn’t, Hayley, it never went through, we are still married,” Matt said. Hayley sat down on the couch.

“This has to be a mistake,” Kevin said.

“It was a mistake marrying him,” Hayley said.

“You asked me to marry you,” Matt said.

“Only to keep Greg away from me,” Hayley said.

        “Who’s Greg?” Nick asked.

“This guy who was obsessed with her, he was an idiot, he was abusive and mean, he knew better than to mess with me so she married me, he left town after we got married,” Matt said.

“I want an annulment, Matt,” Hayley said.

“I tried, but they won’t let me,” Matt said.

“I’m sure you tried,” Hayley said. She went into the kitchen and made a phone call. Nick came in as she hung up.

“Hayley, why didn’t you tell me this?” Nick asked.

“I forgot, I didn’t think it was worth mentioning, I thought it was annulled,” Hayley said.

“Can you get it annulled?” Nick asked.

“My uncle Mike is a lawyer and he is working on it,” Hayley said. The phone rang. Hayley answered it. Nick went out back. Brian came out.

“I can’t believe this, she never told me that she was married,” Nick said as he sat down.

“She might have been afraid of losing you,” Brian said. Hayley came out and Nick stood up.

        “Well?” Nick asked.

“It’s over, the marriage was annulled, Matt was actually happy, he said he wanted to marry his longtime girlfriend,” Hayley said.

“So you are free?” Nick asked.

“Yes,” Hayley said smiling.  Nick hugged her close.

“We can have a real wedding,” Nick said. She smiled and they kissed.
